THE FISH AND WINE ROUTE 2009

The Basque Country, Euskadi as it’s known in the Basque language, is a magical place for all lovers of cycling, and also is one of Lonely Planet's Top 10 Best, must-see, destinations for 2009. This green land has given the sport some of its great riders, cyclists who have shone in the world’s greatest races, like Marino Lejarreta, Abraham Olano or Miguel Indurain. GIANT TOURS offers the chance to enjoy cycling, gastronomy, life and this beautiful scenery in his trip: The Fish & Wine Route.

GIANT TOURS is a biking holiday company set up by Giant Bicycles in Spain, and all the people who are a part of it have one thing in common – a passion for cycling and life. And it’s this passion that we transmit with our cycling tours. We love riding the roads of the Basque Country and the Pyrenees, the ideal place to enjoy cycling at any level, whether you want to train hard or simply go for a relaxing ride.

The TRIP


Basque landscape


Dream landscapes, nice climbs, cuisine for connoiseurs, surprising museums, exquisite hospitality. All this, and more, is offered by our THE FISH & WINE ROUTE. This route travels through the breathtaking landscape of the old commercial route which joined the inland wine-growing areas with the coast for the trade of fresh fish for wine and other produce. From La Rioja Alavesa to the coastal villages of Bizkaia, guests travel through the Basque Country from south to north as we discover the changing countryside and enjoy the delicate shades of colour which are characteristic of this marvellous corner of Europe. Dates: September 18th – September 23rd.

The Hotels

During the first three days we will rest in the Hotel Villa de Laguardia (4*), in the middle of La Rioja.

In the last three days we will rest near the coast, in the fantastic Hotel Castillo the Arteaga (4*).

Nuevo viaje al Tour

Ya hemos hecho otro viaje. Esta vez al Tour de Francia, la carrera de las carreras. "Las Rutas del Tour", ése es el nombre del viaje que hemos hecho y en el qye hemos conseguido unos nuevos amigos y les hemos ayudado a subir por primera vez puertos como el Aubisque o el Tourmalet y a disfrutar de nuevos y magníficos paisajes, como el Circo de Litor, o Troumouse, o Boucharo. Además han visto algunos de ellos por primera vez el Tour de Francia, y nada menos que en el Tourmalet, el mejor lugar del mundo para ver la carrera más legendaria.

Transpirenaica, sexta etapa: We did it

Por fin en Hendaya. ¡Qué alegría! Cansados pero muy satisfechos. Ha sido un viaje estupendo. Poca gente, pero qué buena gente. Así de gusto.

Transpirenaica, cuarta y quinta etapas

Como ayer no pude meter nada, hoy subo fotos de la etapa de ayer y la de hoy, las más bonitas, con el Toumalet y el Aubisque. Casi nada.

Transpirenaica, tercera etapa

Bueno. La etapa de ayer fue ya más dura. Con calor, un poco de lluvia al final, y puertos más exigentes, y una parada emotiva junto al monumento a Fabio Casartelli. Pero todo fue bien y hoy vamos a disfrutar de un merecido descanso en Luchon.
